Epicurious Louisville

Louisville Kentucky is usually renowned for Bourbon, horse racing, and hillbillies. Well I'm no barefoot teenage bride, but I think Louisville should be recognized as a mecca of amazing eats, a veritable undiscovered treasure trove of quirky cafes, upper cut echelon and everything in between.
For everything from sushi to satire, I'm your girl.

Quills, how do I love thee, let me count the ways. I visited Quills to meet with my wedding photographer (the FANTASTIC Sarah Katherine Davis, please check her out and hire her for ALL the things) and I was running low on energy, so I decided to try two of their signature drinks, the Smokehouse and the Veloce.

The Smokehouse ($3.50, I think, maybe a bit more) has coffee, sorghum, cream and liquid smoke in its depths, and it’s hard to explain what it tastes like. My  best simile would be the the Smokehouse is like a winter morning, waking up to a fire in the fireplace, homemade butter biscuits with sorghum, a thick cup of campfire coffee, and sledding afterwards. It’s really amazing.

The Veloce ($2.50) is served in a shot glass, and it’s kind of like seeing your ex boyfriend with a new girlfriend (bitter!) and then realizing that the new girlfriend is Olympic caliber ugly (so sweet!). It’s a thick, strong, manly espresso on top, followed by a decadent layer of silky cream, followed by vanilla syrup. You take it all at once and savor it in your mouth and then you spend the next six hours buzzing around town like a windup toy getting ALL THE THINGS done.

There are lots of other reasons to love Quills (in three locations), their Owl mascots, their cozy interiors, their participation in local latte art competitions, their teas, their brewing tips, the fact that they sell Cellar Door Chocolates. Go there and get buzzing!
