My dear friend Ellen, the donut queen of the bayou, is usually in charge of jumping on the sugary grenade of reviewing a donut shop for me. But this time I can’t resist: I have to tell you about State Donuts, on 12907 Factory Lane. For best results, you ought to go watch Disney’s Johnny Appleseed before you read this review, and pay particular attention to the apple fritters doled out by the settlers during that charming little dance number in the middle. Also get out your handkerchiefs, that darn cartoon makes me cry like crazy.
When you go to State, you will immediately be impressed with the sheer size of the apple fritters. They are the size of a dinner plate, and they are deep fried, glazed, sticky on the inside and crunchy on the outside. I haven’t ever had an apple fritter before now, but it was like getting your first kiss from a professional kisser, or getting your first sushi roll from Oishii—it set the standard. Those apple fritters are the cream of the crop, the apple of my eye, none too seedy, keep your eyes and taste buds peeled for them, other puns, etc.
The filled long johns were amazing too, but we have to face reality: it’s hard to do anything pastry, stuffed with cream and covered in frosting wrong. They were great donuts, but nothing as wonderful as those fritters. I could just roll around in a tray of those fresh fritters all day, wearing a bikini and wallowing. Which might make for a much grosser mental picture than you’re ready for this early in the morning The point is: go to State Donuts right now and get like seventeen apple fritters.
