I can’t stress this enough: you NEED to go to the Monkey Wrench. They have a new chef, a new menu, a new look, and it’s incredibly fantastic. Teacup and I gorged ourselves stupid there on the above deliciousness.
I won’t give you the whole menu spiel I like to give in professional articles but here’s what you need to try:
1. Butter beans and cornbread. This puts the “butter” into butter beans. Hillbilly heaven for only $5.
2. The Monkey Wrench Burger with sirloin, skirt steak, and brisket ground into a burger, American cheese, house cured black pepper bacon, fried spicy pickles, pickled red onion, and creole mustard aioli all on a Nord’s bakery bun. For $9, the burger was huge and we could have split it.
3. THE FRIED CHICKEN. So good. Fried in cast iron with a sorghum glaze and elderberry jam and other fancy stuff—sweet, spicy, savory, amazing. $13. There isn’t a wicked expensive thing on the menu.
4. Four cheese mac with pork belly cracklins. Pork. Belly. Cracklins. Also the grits. Also the greens. Screw it, try the whole menu.
There are lots of new things coming out and lots of exciting things happening. If you want to know more about the Wrench, read my article on Louisville.com about it. One of my new favorite spots.
